1970

Despite a 11-1 overall record, the team finished 2nd to Cathedral Prep in both the Lake Shore League, and the Section 1 Championship.  

1971

With a 9-0-1 league record, the team tied Cathedral Prep for the league title, but finished 2nd to them at the Section 1 Championship. Their 12 dual meet victories is the most in school history. Leading the team were captains Mark Davis, Frank Toomey and Bob Romeo. Toomey led the team at districts with a 9th place finish.

1972

Although only going 4-2 in the Lakeshore League, the team managed to win the Section 1 Championship. The “Most Outstanding Runner” was John Sayles. Fred Brown was the team captain.

1973

The team finished undefeated without any ties for the first time since 1967. They also won the Section 1 title for the 2nd straight season. Although the team didn’t win districts, they did go on to a 12th place finish at states.

1974

1968

The 1968 cross country team had 19 new runners, but still managed a successful season with 9 wins and only 2 losses.  The team won the Central Catholic Invitational, took 2nd at Section 1, lost districts to Strong Vincent, and placed 6th at the state meet.  The team was led by All-State runner, and captain, Jon Bannister, and captain Jay Pratt, who finished 10th at districts.  Bannister finished 12th at the state meet to tie the highest finish ever by a McDowell runner.  

1969

With a 2-3 league record, the team suffered its worst placement to date in the Lakeshore and the Section 1 Championships at 4th place. Earning varsity letters for 1974 were: Bruce Gorniak, Ian Irvin, Terry Smathers, Dave Bell, Mark Hoffman, Mike Sullivan, Jim Bohn, Dave Webster, and Doug Birchard. Dave Webster was the top runner.

1975

Mark Hoffman was named the Most Outstanding Runner of 1975. The team finished 3rd to Strong Vincent and Cathedral Prep in both the Metro League and the Section 1 Championship.

1976

The team advanced to the state championship with a 2nd place district finish. They also finished 2nd to Cathedral Prep in both the Metro and Section 1 Championship. Dave Webster was the Most Outstanding Runner of 1976, who placed 67th at the state meet.

1977

The team finished 3rd in both the Metro and Section 1 in Gary Johnson’s 1st and only season at McDowell. Team captains were Bill Newell, Fred Darling and Dan Stroup. John Cardwell lead them at districts in 24th place. Fred Darling finished 33rd.

1978

Bill Newell was named the Most Outstanding Runner of 1978 as the team finished 3rd in the Metro, Section 1, and in the District 10 Championship.

1979

Mike Miodus placed 3rd in Section 1, 4th in District 10, and was 68th in the state meet and was named the Runner of the Year for 1979. John Cartmell also led the team as a captain.
